YOU LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERYDAY

The month of February has been deemed Black History Month, which I feel is very important that our youth and grown folk as well have something to remind us not only of our past and of the long-suffering of our forefather's  but also of those figures who continue to pave the way to enable us to be proud of their accomplishments while hopefully being able to add our own personal victories to the list of Black History Month.

I myself am very grateful for Black History Month because I always learn something about my heritage that I didn't know before, only because it wasn't taught to me in my history book in school.  I can speak for myself of the joy that it puts in my heart just to learn of so many black representatives who were inventors, writers, dancers, singers, composers, activist, artist, magicians, musicians, promoters and so on that have left a blueprint for us to follow.

It's so easy for us to remember the bad that you can loose site on all of the good that we should be concentrating on in order to continue to be leader's in the forefront and to be able to be a good example to teach those youth coming up that are our future and to instill in our youth how proud they should be to be Black.  I'm sure that if you did the research, you would find that history in your own family lineage and be able to pass it on.  It's even more exciting when you find out that your parents, relatives, and grandparents are a part of Black History Month, let's keep passing the torch.

A surprising experience occurred about a week ago putting that around the 3rd of February when I received an inquiry from my website asking if I could be available for an interview.  Now, what was really exciting about this was that Connor is a high school student that is writing a report on my father Melvin Jackson (saxophonist to B.B. KING) that was being written for The African American National Biography.  Needless to say, I was honored to receive such a request and during the interview he asked me the date that my mother and father were married and where?  To my surprise, I DIDN'T KNOW! I couldn't believe that I had never thought about their wedding date; probably because I didn't grow up with them both in the same household.:-)  So I picked up the phone, called my mother and got the date. LOL
